Mercier: book the wheelchair train space directly
Mercier, 68 avenue de Champagne, publishes a panoramic lift into the cellars and dedicated spaces for wheelchair users on its visitor train. Wheelchair-space reservations go directly to visitescaves@champagnemercier.com or +33 3 26 51 22 22. Select the experience with the visitor team before paying for a standard online place.
The Mercier train travels through part of an 18 km cellar network, 30 metres below ground. The house gives a year-round cellar temperature of 10–12°C. Its French Sign Language commentary is supplied on a tablet on request; this is LSF, not British Sign Language. A non-drinker rate and a non-alcoholic tasting alternative are also requested directly from Mercier.
Château Perrier: a parallel entrance and lifts
The Musée du vin de Champagne et d’Archéologie régionale is at 13 avenue de Champagne. A smooth route crosses the cobbled courtyard, while a parallel accessible entrance avoids the steps at the main door. Reception staff direct visitors to it. Lifts and a platform lift serve the permanent collection; one small room in the temporary-exhibition pavilion remains inaccessible because of a narrow staircase.
The museum provides seats, stools, a loan wheelchair and folding seat-sticks. Audio description, tactile models, touchable objects, some Braille labels and tactile guidance support blind and partially sighted visitors. An induction loop, subtitles or LSF versions of permanent audiovisual content, a video guide and an easy-read FALC audio option are published facilities.
Adapted toilets are in the museum and both pavilions. Parking des Arts, rue de Reims, has reserved spaces; the museum describes a gently sloping 300-metre route through the park. Disabled visitors and companions enter free with supporting documentation. For individual visits, contact billetterie.musee@ville-epernay.fr or +33 3 26 55 03 56; workshops and guided groups use +33 3 26 55 86 68.
Boizel and the tourist-office reception
The official Hautvillers tourist-office listing for Boizel’s Atelier 1834, 46 avenue de Champagne, includes a lift, private parking and a 75-minute individual visit. It does not publish wheelchair dimensions or a complete step-free route specification. Send the details of your chair and the requested cellar experience to visites@boizel.fr, or call +33 3 26 55 91 49.
Épernay’s tourist office is at 7 avenue de Champagne. Its January 2024 access catalogue describes automatic doors, a lowered reception counter, an induction loop, tactile guidance and simplified pictograms. The office lists reserved parking on rue Jean Chandon-Moët, about 50 metres away. The catalogue records partner declarations from September 2023, so its dated property entries are leads for direct enquiries.
A named adapted-transfer enquiry
A’Gil Taxi is listed by Épernay tourism with a PMR service, a station office and the telephone +33 3 26 59 01 44. The access catalogue records a vehicle suitable for electric wheelchairs and SMS reservations; allocation still needs to be arranged for your journey. Give the operator the station arrival, chair dimensions, destination address and return collection time.
The Épernay house-by-house walk identifies avenue addresses, while Where to Stay links named hotels. A hotel’s available bedroom and the transfer to Mercier at number 68 are separate booking arrangements; the tourist office can direct an accommodation enquiry to the listed property.
