Reims and Épernay: the two bases
The two station pins mark the city bases; the railway journey and each house visit are separate bookings.

Reims’s most recognisable underground visits spread across different neighbourhoods. Mumm receives visitors at 34 rue du Champ de Mars, while Ruinart’s pavilion is at 4 rue des Crayères. Taittinger uses the former Saint-Nicaise abbey site and Pommery stands at 5 place du Général Gouraud. A cathedral-area room does not put every house beside the front door.
Épernay gives a different shape to the day. The official visitor entrances run along the Avenue de Champagne: Moët at 18, the Perrier-Jouët Cellier at 26, Boizel at 46 and Mercier at 68. The street makes an enjoyable architectural walk between appointments, but a walk past a mansion is not an interior ticket. Pol Roger at 34 is a private working house; its official website says it is not open to public visits.
Mercier’s Founder is €25 for 45 minutes and one Blanc de Noirs; Ruinart’s standard Crayères visit is €90 for two hours and two cuvées (checked October 2026). Both belong to Champagne, but they give different amounts of time underground and different tasting formats. Our first-timer’s guide explains the choices before you buy.

Eurostar arrives at Paris Gare du Nord; the Reims and Épernay rail departures use Gare de l’Est. For a Reims booking, distinguish the central station from Champagne-Ardenne TGV at Bezannes. Grand Est’s official access information puts the latter 8 km from Reims. Its onward tram or TER connection belongs in the journey, particularly when an operator meets a group beside Reims Centre station.
SNCF Connect advertises Paris–Reims journeys as fast as 46 minutes. A dated example for 24 October 2026 leaves Paris Est at 08:28 and reaches Reims at 09:14; that departure is a dated example of the direct route for 24 October 2026. Select your own travel date in SNCF Connect. Épernay has its own station, and the tourist office at 7 avenue de Champagne gives a route of under 500 m from the station forecourt to the office. Choose the final station that serves the booked accommodation.
The two bases can share a holiday without moving the car between tastings. SNCF’s 24 October example leaves Reims at 09:19, calls at Aÿ at 09:46 and reaches Épernay at 09:53. Selected services also use vineyard-corridor stations including Rilly-la-Montagne, Germaine and Avenay. Use the Paris and local train guide for the actual dated connection and leave the house departure tied to its reservation.
Reims is the stronger choice for a mixed-interest city break. Notre-Dame Cathedral, the former Abbey of Saint-Remi and the Palais du Tau entered the World Heritage List in 1991. Saint-Nicaise Hill’s cellar landscape belongs to the separate 2015 Champagne inscription. This gives one day a Gothic and royal-city theme and another an underground production theme, without making wine the only subject.
The cathedral’s Smiling Angel is on the western façade, and Marc Chagall’s three windows were installed in 1974. Saint-Remi Basilica is a separate church in the southern quarter. The Palais du Tau remains closed for renovation, so its exterior and the cathedral square belong in the plan without assuming a palace-interior visit. For twentieth-century history, the Musée de la Reddition commemorates the surrender signed inReims on 7 May 1945.
Épernay’s cultural core is smaller and closely connected to wine. Château Perrier at 13 avenue de Champagne contains the museum of Champagne wine and regional archaeology. De Castellane’s tower rises 66 m; its current visitor position separates tower and heritage experiences from cellars that remain temporarily closed to the public. The Avenue itself belongs to the 2015 UNESCO property with Fort Chabrol. See the Épernay sights guide for each actual opening and ticket.

For an evening with several central restaurant choices, Reims has Place Drouet-d’Erlon: L’Edito at 78–80, L’Apostrophe at 59 and Brasserie Excelsior at 96. The Boulingrin quarter adds its covered market and Trésors de Champagne at 2 rue Olivier Métra. At Boulingrin, the city lists a 07:00–13:00 Friday market and a 06:00–14:00 Saturday market. Those times suit a food-shopping morning, not an assumed Sunday market.
Reims also reaches from brasserie meals to Le Parc at Domaine Les Crayères, listed with two stars in the 2026 Michelin Guide France. Brasserie du Boulingrin publishes a Champagne list including Pol Roger, Louis Roederer and Laurent-Perrier. A named wine list is useful for trying a house whose cellars are not a general public visit; the exact bottle still depends on the restaurant’s current stock. Use the Reims restaurant and bar guide for addresses, menus and booking.
Épernay’s evening choices concentrate around the centre and the Avenue. La Table Kobus is at 3 rue du Docteur Rousseau, and the tourist office lists La Cave à Champagne and Le 17 Lounge Bar. Perrier-Jouët’s Cellier at 26 avenue de Champagne has a bar and dining, while its Maison Belle Epoque at 11 offers a separate gastronomic booking. The €95 Art of Chardonnay at the Cellier is a one-hour, two-cuvée tasting without a cellar tour (checked October 2026); it is not a ticket to the mansion. Neither town’s restaurant directory establishes a guaranteed late-night closing time.
Reims Centre and Drouet-d’Erlon suit arrivals by rail, dinner in the central brasseries and a market morning inBoulingrin. A cathedral-area stay has a different immediate landmark: the tourist office is at 6 rue Rockefeller beside Notre-Dame. Hotels around Saint-Nicaise are useful for the south-eastern estates but need a separate journey back to the station. The accommodation guide distinguishes these areas and links named properties.
For Épernay, Hôtel Jean Moët at 7 rue Jean Moët is a central address near the western end of the Avenue. Le 25bis is an Avenue guest house, while Hautvillers and Aÿ are separate village choices. Épernay’s tourist office places Hautvillers 6 km from the town. A vineyard-village bedroom therefore changes the evening transport calculation, even when the booking search describes the wider Épernay area. Use the actual street and commune when ordering a taxi.
Drivers can use either town as a base, but reserve the hotel’s parking arrangement with the room. Épernay’s tourist office places Parking du Jard 150 m from its Avenue reception, entered from rue Eugène Mercier. Reims has separate city-centre and Bezannes arrival patterns. These are parking and location facts, not a reason to drive between tastings: the UK road itinerary leaves tasting transport to sober drivers, taxis or booked tours.
Check the route below ground as well as the town
For access planning, Reims and Épernay each have a separate destination guide with named assistance contacts. Boizel’s Épernay visitor listing identifies a lift; Ruinart’s Reims pavilion lists accessible surface facilities, but that does not establish access to every underground gallery. Jacquinot’s Épernay cellar visit involves 106 steps. Tell the house which route and tasting you want before buying, because the station, reception building and cellar are three different parts of the day.
SNCF’s Assist’enGare asks for assistance requests at least 24 hours before departure. Supply the exact station: Reims Centre, Champagne-Ardenne TGV and Épernay are separate bookings. Read the Reims accessibility guide and Épernay accessibility guide alongside the hotel’s room-access specification.
For couples whose main aim is an Avenue stroll, one named cellar and dinner, choose Épernay. Moët, Boizel, Mercier and the Cellier supply separate visitor formats along the same street, with Château Perrier between them. Our celebration weekend uses named bookings; add the Maison Belle Epoque only if that separate gastronomic experience is the occasion you want.
For friends with varied interests, choose Reims when the cathedral, Boulingrin, central restaurants and a cellar visit all appeal. The friends’ weekend uses a booked group outing with lunch so that the driver does not miss the tasting. For enthusiasts comparing producers, Épernay’s neighbouring Aÿ and Côte des Blancs route adds Geoffroy, De Sousa and Larmandier-Bernier by appointment; the grower itinerary sets out those separate addresses.
For Christmas 2026, choose Reims for the market on 25 November–27 December, or Épernay for Habits de Lumière on 11–13 December. The Reims market uses the Hautes Promenades Jean-Louis Schneiter and Porte de Mars esplanade; Habits centres on the Avenue de Champagne. Combine them with the Christmas itinerary if the dated trains and rooms suit. The two events are not the same festival or a single entry ticket.
Is Reims worth visiting without a cellar tour?
Yes: the cathedral and former Saint-Remi abbey belong to the 1991 UNESCO property, while the Musée de la Reddition tells the 7 May 1945 surrender story. The Boulingrin market and Porte de Mars add food and Roman heritage to a city break.
Can I visit Épernay from Reims by train?
Yes. SNCF’s 24 October 2026 example runs fromReims 09:19 toÉpernay 09:53, with an Aÿ stop. Use your actual travel date for the booked train and pair it with a house’s timed reservation.
Which base is easier for an Avenue de Champagne walk?
Épernay: its tourist office at 7 avenue de Champagne is under 500 m from the station on the official walking route. Moët’s visitor entrance is at 18, Boizel at 46 and Mercier at 68.
