History
Bergère family vineyard ownership dates to 1848. Albert established the Champagne business in 1949, followed by André and Brigitte in 1986. The family’s vineyard geography grew from Fèrebrianges, Étoges and Congy towards Chardonnay sites in the Côte des Blancs and Sézannais. Fèrebrianges remains the production domaine in the Vallée du Petit Morin.
Brigitte bought the property at 38–40 avenue de Champagne in 2007. Wine merchant Louis Plomb had previously lived there, and the Pol Roger family acquired it in 1920. Its restoration combined retained exterior architecture with work by local specialists: Lattela supplied Burgundy stone, Vernier ironwork and Charmeret wooden fittings.
After two years of restoration the Avenue property opened as a boutique and guest house. Annaëlle joined the Épernay business in 2009. Her brother Adrien, an oenologist, entered the domaine in 2014. That harvest introduced separate treatment of promising parcels and the first barrels purchased for his winemaking programme.
The producer’s winemaking account describes 139 plots vinified separately. Massal selections descending from Albert’s vines remain part of the vineyard inheritance. Stainless steel, barrels and foudres supply different ageing vessels, while the component wines are tasted blind in May before blending. The range now includes named parcels such as Les Clos, Les Peignottes and Les Vignes de Nuit.
The apartment development called Bis opened in 2020, extending the family’s Épernay accommodation beyond the 38–40 townhouse. La Cave de l’Avenue, at 5 avenue de Champagne, is another named element of its hospitality history. These Avenue developments grew alongside the countryside domaine.
His sister Annaëlle manages the Épernay establishment; their parents André and Brigitte are also named in the official family history.
A nineteenth-century townhouse at 38–40
The boutique and guest house opened after two years of restoration, with Annaëlle joining in 2009. The official accommodation page calls this address “the 38–40”; the family’s separate apartment development, “Bis”, opened in 2020. Neither address should be substituted for the working winery in Fèrebrianges when arranging an independent producer appointment.

The domaine outing from Épernay
The official “Visit the wine domaine” page lists departures from 38–40 avenue de Champagne daily at 09:30 or 14:30, at €90 per person (checked October 2026). The described route uses the house’s vehicle for the vineyard drive, visits the domaine and cellars in Fèrebrianges, then returns to the Avenue tasting cellar for three Champagnes.
Book by telephone on +33 3 26 32 07 19 or through the enquiry form on the official domaine-visit page. The same page also names a shorter “Grand Cru Tour and Tasting”: a van outing through the Côte des Blancs with one Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru served at a viewpoint. It does not clearly distinguish a separate current price or duration for that shorter product, so €90 is not automatically assigned to both.
139 plots and a May blending session
Adrien’s production account describes 139 plots, each vinified separately before blending. Since 2014 the domaine has worked with vines from Albert Bergère’s massal selections. Fermentation can be spontaneous or use yeasts selected from the vineyards, and is followed by malolactic fermentation; ageing vessels include stainless-steel tanks, oak barrels and large foudres.
The domaine names May as the blending period, when Adrien tastes the component wines blind, plot by plot. Its published method omits refrigeration, fining and filtration at the blending stage. This makes the Fèrebrianges winery the relevant part of the outing for production detail, while the Avenue cellar provides the concluding tasting.
The named ranges
The “Icons” range includes Origine Brut, Blanc de Blancs Brut Solera, Terres Blanches Brut Nature, Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Extra-Brut and Millésime 2015 Brut. The official range also includes Petit Meslier, a less familiar Champagne grape, alongside a blended rosé and a rosé de saignée. A three-wine tour tasting is not a guarantee that every one of these bottles will be poured.
The single-vineyard range identifies Les Clos as 100% Meunier, and Les Peignottes and Les Vignes de Nuit as 100% Chardonnay. Still wines are listed separately under Coteaux Champenois: Fèrebrianges Blanc is Chardonnay and Fèrebrianges Rouge is Pinot Noir. Ratafia champenois appears in its own category. These names help distinguish the wine styles sold in the boutique from the particular Champagnes included in a booked outing.
A Bergère restaurant at number 5
Adrien and Annaëlle also opened La Cave de l’Avenue at 5 avenue de Champagne, according to the official family history. Adrien selects its wine list, including grower Champagnes. The restaurant is therefore a different address from the 38–40 boutique and the Fèrebrianges production estate; it is not an included lunch stop in the domaine outing described above.
The guest rooms at 38–40 provide an overnight option in the actual tasting building. The accommodation guide contains Booking.com links for Épernay, and the town guide follows the Avenue from its tourist office at number 7 towards the eastern houses. Room rates, restaurant menus and the availability of a specific departure are supplied by their individual booking pages.
Language and the correct meeting point
The Comité Champagne producer directory lists English and French for A. Bergère. It gives the Avenue reception hours as 10:30–12:00 and 14:00–18:00, while the house’s domaine tour can depart at 09:30. A booked early outing therefore takes precedence over treating general boutique hours as the tour timetable. The booking request should name either the Fèrebrianges domaine tour or the shorter Grand Cru outing, together with the required language.
Access and facilities
A. Bergère’s visitor address is 38–40 avenue de Champagne, but the family’s production domaine is at Fèrebrianges in the Vallée du Petit Morin. Its official domaine outing starts in Épernay, travels by the house’s vehicle to the countryside and finishes with three Champagnes beneath the Avenue.
