Why the royal city is the setting

Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Palace of Tau and the former Abbey of Saint-Rémi form Reims’s 1991 UNESCO World Heritage property. The historic city’s coronation heritage supplies the context for the Johanniques tradition and the current Épopée Légendaire weekend. The UNESCO property is separate from the Champagne hillsides and cellars listing of 2015.

Reims tourist office’s 2026 event page places the historical weekend in the heart of the city. A future parade’s precise streets are not supplied here until the organiser publishes them. Use the Reims hub for cathedral and Saint-Remi sightseeing on either side of an event booking.

A Reims base for the announced dates

Continental Hotel, 93 place Drouet-d’Erlon, puts a stay on the central restaurant square; Hôtel de la Paix, 9 rue Buirette, offers another central address. Hôtel Azur is in the Boulingrin district. Our accommodation guide links each verified property instead of promising a festival package.

Paris Est–Reims direct TGV journeys can take 46 minutes according to SNCF Connect. Select Reims Centre for a central arrival; Champagne-Ardenne TGV is a different station outside the city. The actual May 2027 return timetable must be obtained from the booking result, not from a 2026 sample train.

The cathedral behind the royal story

The Centre des monuments nationaux traces the cathedral site to an earlier church built by Saint Nicaise in 401 on former baths. A Carolingian cathedral followed in 820 and was consecrated in 862 in the presence of Charles the Bald. Fire destroyed that building on 6 May 1210; Archbishop Aubry de Humbert commissioned the present Gothic cathedral the following year.

The monument authority says the bulk of the new cathedral was constructed in only 60 years. Its current account counts 2,303 statues. This gives the festival’s royal setting a specific architectural history: the building visitors see today belongs to the thirteenth-century rebuilding, while the Christian history of the site reaches considerably further back.

Look at the façade before the festival streets

The cathedral’s monument authority identifies three different sculptural programmes on the western portals: the Passion on the left, the Apocalypse and Last Judgment on the right, and the life and glorification of the Virgin in the centre. The façade rises through portals, the upper level, the gallery of kings and the belfries. Those elements remain visible independently of any festival performance.

Make the historic visit a Reims overnight

A festival stay in central Reims can use the Continental Hotel at 93 place Drouet-d’Erlon, Hôtel de la Paix at 9 rue Buirette, or Hôtel Azur in the Boulingrin district. These are city accommodation choices, distinct from an Épernay or Aÿ vineyard itinerary. The stays guide opens the individual Booking.com listing for each named Reims property through its CJ accommodation link.

Paris Est–Reims direct trains take as little as 46 minutes in SNCF Connect’s published route information. Reims Centre arrives at Cour de la Gare; Champagne-Ardenne TGV lies outside the centre. For a London arrival, Eurostar terminates at Gare du Nord and describes the connection to Gare de l’Est as about ten minutes on foot.

The city’s announced next edition is 29–30 May 2027. Reserve accommodation against those dates, then check the official programme when it is issued for precise street-performance locations. The detailed 2026 programme belongs to the completed 30–31 May 2026 edition and should not be used as a timetable for the following year.

A cellar stop has a separate historic setting

Taittinger’s visitor site at 9 place Saint-Nicaise uses Gallo-Roman chalk quarries and the remains of the former abbey, 18 metres below ground. The house gives a cellar temperature of 12°C and offers French and English visits. Its 70-minute Instant Rosé experience costs €40 on the October 2026 official tariff and includes Brut Réserve and Prestige Rosé.

This Champagne-house cellar visit requires its own paid departure; the city’s royal-history festival does not bundle that appointment into street access. Choose the house’s actual dated slot before adding it to a May programme. The location at Saint-Nicaise is distinct from the cathedral setting, so retain both addresses when arranging the day.

Access and facilities

The 2027 dates are supported by the city’s indexed announcement; the full page currently requires JavaScript and cookies. A detailed 2027 parade route, timetable, ticket policy and accessibility plan were not verified. The previous edition’s programme should not be presented as a announced 2027 schedule.

The city’s Épopée Légendaire page is the official source for the forthcoming programme. Reims tourist office at 6 rue Rockefeller supplies local visitor information; use its official contact route for the 2027 accessible parade viewing, toilets and transport arrangements once released. No accessibility specification for the new edition was verified in October 2026.

The separate tower tour involves 249 steps. Its gallery-of-kings level stands 40 metres above the ground, with statues 4.60 metres high and weighing almost eight tonnes. The cathedral tower is a paid monument experience with its own reservation, outside the street-festival programme. Its 249 steps lead to the high-level route; visitors needing step-free cathedral access should use the separate information for the ground-floor entrance.

The City of Reims’s official Épopée Légendaire page announces the next edition for 29 and 30 May 2027. The 2026 weekend took place on 30–31 May. Reims tourist office presents Épopée Légendaire as a new chapter of the Fêtes Johanniques, so this guide retains the familiar Johanniques name in its address while using the current event name.

What a Brit travelling here needs to know

  • Rail and flights: Eurostar links London St Pancras with Paris Gare du Nord; Reims and Épernay trains leave Paris Gare de l’Est. For a flight arrival, compare Paris Charles de Gaulle with your onward SNCF station and date in the transport guide.
  • Documents: for a British-citizen passport, GOV.UK specifies an issue date less than 10 years before arrival and expiry at least 3 months after leaving Schengen. Visa-free tourist visits are limited to 90 days in any 180. Read the current official entry requirements.
  • Money, language and clocks: France uses euros (€) and French; Champagne is 1 hour ahead of the UK. Select English explicitly on a house’s reservation page.
  • Local travel: Reims Centre and Champagne-Ardenne TGV are different stations. Épernay’s station serves the Avenue de Champagne; Hautvillers needs a road transfer. Use the car-free guide for named rail, taxi and tour options.

Entry details checked 23 October 2026. The official GOV.UK page covers other passport types and border procedures.
